Have you been to the mountains this year? These peak summer days, but also autumn, are perfect times to explore your local mountains. UV protection is essential, especially in sunny weather, and the best way to achieve this is with high-quality sports glasses. But why is UV protection so important in the mountains, and what should you pay particular attention to when choosing your sports glasses for hiking? We'll cover these topics in more detail here.
Sports glasses are a must when hiking
When the sun is strong, it is standard for every hiking enthusiast to use sunscreen to protect themselves from UV rays. Sports glasses are often forgotten, even though they also offer crucial protection from the sun. In addition to the sun, your sports glasses also protect your eyes from dust, insects and pollen, giving you perfect vision at all times. Especially on long and strenuous mountain tours, sports glasses can help you stay focused because they save you from annoying outside distractions. In addition, sports glasses have become real fashion accessories in recent years, allowing you to become an eye-catcher on any mountain.
An often overlooked factor is that UV radiation becomes stronger the higher you climb the mountain. This makes your sports glasses even more indispensable. The rule of thumb is that UV radiation increases by 10-20% for every 1,000 meters of altitude. Above certain altitudes on the mountain (at least above 3,000m), very dark category 4 lenses are recommended. This is also because snow and ice at high altitudes reflect the sun, which can make UV radiation even stronger. For an average mountain tour in sunny conditions, however, category 3 lenses with a VLT value of 9-19% are more suitable. This means that up to 19% of all visible light rays pass through the lens. You can find more information about the meaning of VLT values in this blog.
